The KLM opens a regular service between the Netherlands and America. The Douglas DC-4 Skymaster PH-TAR "Rotterdam" departs from Schiphol Airport for the first flight to New York. SHOTS: - the journey of the ship "De Halve Maan" (The Half Moon) from the Netherlands to America and the foundation of the colony New Amsterdam at the Hudson estuary in 1609 is visualised with prints and an old sea chart; - departure from Schiphol Airport: ext. airplane; captain Evert van Dijk talks to KLM director H. Martin; passengers board the plane, a.o. a Polygoon Camera for Neerlands Nieuws (Dutch News); crew poses; airplane takes off; - during the flight: several aerial shots: Schiphol Airport, landscape, clouds, IJmuiden, the Dutch and Scottish coast, sunset above the clouds, Statue of Liberty, suspension bridge across the bay; skyscrapers; shots of the wings with engines and turning propellers; int. airplane: crew in the cockpit; radio operator talks in the microphone; passengers in the cabin: talking to eachother, looking out the window, receiving a cup of tea, sleeping; - stop over at Prestwick airport, where the plane is refueled and then departs again; - passengers leave the airplane in America; - edited in between these shots: flying shots and the landing of another Skymaster, the PH-TAS.
