The automatic telephone exchange in Arnhem was destroyed during the Second World War. After the war the PTT commisioned the built of two storeys on top of an old German bunker. A temporary manually operated telephone exchange was put up on the first floor; at the same time the construction of a new automatic exchange was started on the second floor. The latter is now finished and operational. The manually operated exchange is now redundant. SHOTS: - large empty hole in the street where the old exchange used to be; - ext. bunker with extra storeys; - int. manually operated exchange at work: ext. equipment with a.o. cables and a row of busy operators behind switchboards; int. manually operated exchange out of order: everything is motionless and abandoned: empty chairs and empty switchboards; - int. automatic exchange with close ups of equipment.
